Community Learning for Sustainability Moxviquil It is a meeting space that contributes to the training of various key actors and the general population on environmental, social, cultural and economic issues. in order to provide experiences and conceptual and methodological tools that promote sustainable development and conservation of natural resources in the State of Chiapas.

Moxviquil A.C. is divided into three areas of work:

  1. Center for Environmental Education and Culture (CECA) 2. Capacity Building 3. Institute of Higher Education in Sustainable Human Development

What is the CECA?

It is a Center for Environmental Education and Culture, which collaborates with different interest groups to strengthen, build and co-create learning communities that activate commitments on Socio-Environmental, Sustainability and Good Living issues and projects.

We are an area dedicated to generate and offer transformative experiences through awareness-raising actions that allow linking people's life practices with biodiversity for a sustainable environmental culture.

Our spaces

  • Our Ecological Reserves (Huitepec and Moxviquil) they are spaces for conservation, protection, research, recreation and environmental awareness.
  • Jade Heart Garden Museum It is an educational, cultural and conservation space, which encourages coexistence and recreation for the knowledge and dissemination of knowledge related to biodiversity and in particular with the medicinal plants of the region, for the Re-significance of the knowledge of the original peoples in articulation with current knowledge from biology and botany.

 

OUR SPACES

The CECA Moxviquil has different spaces: Moxviquil and Huitepec Ecological Reserves, UMA Orquídeas and Corazón de Jade. We visualize these spaces as the roots from which our Programs and Actions, starting with the stem that corresponds to the Youth Program for a Socio-Environmental Commitment to which the people who collaborate are integrated in order to learn and help us to make effective our commitments and purposes of the rest of our Programs and Actions. The petals of the flower express each of the Programs through which We promote various processes and learning experiences that promote the formation of Environmental Citizenship.

The CECA Moxviquil A.C. has various Programs and projects that require support in actions, participation, will and initiative of young people. Not all activities are permanent, many of them are generated depending on the needs of the Center, the number of participants or the decisions made within the team for their execution. There are responsible people in each of the areas that are mentioned and each participant who enters to collaborate with the program Young people for a socio-environmental commitment It is integrated to participate in one or more of the activities that are had, depending on the degree of collaboration that is needed.

 

Objectives of our Programs

  1. Youth for a Socio-environmental Commitment Involve committed people to actively participate in the fulfillment of the purposes and goals of the Programs and projects under execution by CECA, and thus contribute to the strengthening of their own knowledge, skills and values. Is about to train through participation in experiences aimed at the formation of environmental citizenship.

Formation of groups outdoors Contribute to the training and dissemination of the knowledge offered by the Moxviquil and Huitepec ecological reserves, Corazón de Jade - Museo Jardín and other nature spaces, through experiences that allow to enjoy and value the natural environment with a view to the conservation of biological diversity and in this way contribute to the formation of environmental citizenship.

The population served are visitors (local, national or foreign) who come to our spaces spontaneously or through the planning of activities,

Educational Communities towards Sustainability It is the work with educational communities, particularly with basic education schools, with the purpose of generate meaningful experiences and genuine, through participatory processes that allow to build, strengthen, re-signify and transform values, habits and ways of co-existing harmoniously with nature, towards the formation of a socially and environmentally responsible community.

  1. Ecotecnias: Practices oriented towards sustainability Achieve the construction, operation and maintenance of ecotecnias that provide services to the Moxviquil Center, which at the same time function as demonstration spaces and for training that promotes practices oriented towards sustainability.
  2. A Orchid Garden Conserve and recover orchids and bromeliads from the state of Chiapas through an Environmental Management Unit (UMA) for the management and knowledge of species for educational purposes.
  3. Summer course Co-build community with boys and girls from 5 to 15 years of age through a summer course that contributes to the recognition and strengthening of values, habits, ways of being and being that promote a responsible life with the natural dynamics of our mother earth.

Activities to be carried out by Program and Spaces

These are part of the activities to be developed within each Program and Space; Many of these activities are permanent, others are organized according to the school calendar and others are specific activities that take place at certain times of the year, for example, the Summer Course.

  • Educational Communities towards Sustainability

Echoprendo: is a Program that works in collaboration with other civil organizations to accompany public and private schools in processes that range from raising awareness, visiting natural areas of the Jovel Valley Basin, to addressing environmental issues, to defining actions and projects that generate significant changes in the daily practices of the school; in such a way that schools assume commitments that contribute to moving towards the construction of Educational Communities towards sustainability

Habitat conservation through the Chipilo story: Acompañar procesos formativos dirigidos a docentes de los altos de Chiapas pertenecientes a comunidades Tsoltsiles, a través del cuento y guía didáctica "Aprendiendo de volada con Chipilo" que aborda temas sobre la conservación de las aves.

Workshops to schools / organizations: Meaningful experiences are designed and implemented for diverse groups with environmental content in different parts of the basin and for which the Center is responsible: Huitepec, Moxviquil and Corazón de Jade, Museo Jardín.

Camps: Camps are designed and implemented according to the interest of diverse groups in order to offer experiences where recreation and learning are combined.

  • Ecological Reserve

Maintenance: Different care and maintenance actions are carried out to ensure that the spaces for common use are in good condition.

Tours of the reserves: Accompaniment is offered to visitors who come to the ecological reserves, to guarantee the safety of the visitor, as well as to see for the care of the space, offering relevant information about the site.

Flora identification: Collaboration in the identification of flora found in the reserves for the generation of catalogs and as an input for the enrichment of the inventory and strengthening of the Management Plan.

Attention to visitors: Receive visitors and inform them about the activities that can be carried out in the Reserves, as well as to provide general information about the Center. The tasks and responsibilities in this area consist of: receiving calls, cleaning your work area and parking lot, support in capturing and systematizing the different work processes that are generated in the CECA.

Ecosystem Restoration: In collaboration with Pronatura Sur, actions are carried out for the recovery of ecosystems in the basin, these can be: seed collection, tree monitoring, reforestation in the different reserves, nursery work, among other activities.

Productive area: Collaboration in the garden for the creation of planting beds, maintenance of spaces, nurseries, irrigation, harvesting, among other activities that add to the self-sustainable production of the Training Center

  • A Orchid Garden

UMA Environmental Management Unit: This project contemplates monitoring the identification, for the generation of the list and catalog of orchids and bromeliads.

Pest control and management: Rehabilitation of the quarantine area for the identification of orchids and bromeliads that contain some type of plague to be extracted and taken to the quarantine area.

Propagation and relocation of orchids and bromeliads: Support for the work team to maintain the areas where the orchids and bromeliads are found and to see if they should be relocated to other spaces.

Maintenance: Collaborate with the people in charge of the UMA for cleaning spaces, lawn pruning, selective pruning, bridge maintenance, among other activities required by the area.

Attention to visitors: Accompanying visitors, and vigilance to prevent the extraction and theft of flora in the UMA, as well as to provide basic and relevant information about these plants

  • Jade Heart -Garden Museum:

Education and culture: To be a reference site for biocultural issues and environmental education in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

Educational and cultural activities: Workshops, forums, movies, and guided tours are promoted, the purpose of which is to raise awareness with a view to training citizens on environmental issues.

Garden maintenance: Different actions are carried out to care for the medicinal plants of the different islands, as well as the garden infrastructure.

Maintenance and monitoring of orchards: Collaboration in the garden for the creation of seed beds, compost and vermicompost, maintenance of spaces, nursery, irrigation, harvest, among other activities that add to the self-sustaining production of the Museum-Garden.

Medicinal plants: Monitoring and support in the tasks of identifying the flora that the garden has for the generation of the catalog, signage and other support resources for the information of the visitors.

Cafeteria and Services: Provide the cafeteria service to visitors and the services of food and rent of spaces that they request for groups that wish to carry out educational, academic or cultural activities.

Attention to visitors: Registration and accompaniment to visitors offering interesting and relevant information in relation to the plants of the Garden and the educational and cultural activities offered in the monthly Program.

  • Ecotecnologías There are eco-technologies that are intended to serve the Center and be demonstration spaces.

Maintenance: Inside the Moxviquil center they have ecotechnologies such as; Wood-saving stove and oven, vermifilter, biofilter, oxidation channels, dry toilets that need care and / or repair for their use.

Compost and vermicompost: Monitoring and care of the area.

Bioconstruction: Alternative constructions with the technique of bajareque, pajarcilla, among others, to generate infrastructure in the spaces. (Temporary)
